British Columbians Book 50,479 Campsites in BC Parks on May 25, 2020
After patiently practicing social distancing for most of the spring, people across North America are eager to get outdoors and camp this summer. Nowhere is this more evident than in British Columbia, where residents made 50,479 reservations to camp in the parks that they love on the day that BC Parks reopened its campgrounds for advance bookings online. The bookings made on May 25th amounted to 25% of the entire previous year’s reservation totals over the course of only a few hours.
While some hopeful campers experienced slowdowns and other frustrations due to the overwhelming demand for campsites, Recreation Dynamics was up to the challenge. At its peak, the system processed 10 reservations per second at a rate of 36,000 per hour, resulting in many happy campers.
According to the RV Industry Association, RV sales are up by 170% in some parts of the U.S. Combined with the record bookings in BC, this is proof that people still love to camp, perhaps now more than ever, and that our beloved state and provincial parks will remain a core component of our heritage despite COVID 19.
